1853 50C BG-302 "Peacock" California Fractional Gold PCGS MS63
Availability: In stock
Deep orange gold toning, on this popular Liberty head octagonal 50c piece. What makes this a distinct variety is the reverse which is called the "Peacock Reverse", but in actuality the design was depicting an eagle standing on an arrow, and what appear to be feathers are actually sun rays behind the eagle. As it looks more like a Peacock with tail feathers displayed, thus the popular variety name. This would appear to be die state 2 with clearly evident die rust in the obverse field. There are a few scattered marks limiting the grade but the overall eye appeal is above average and we like this one because it hasn't been processed to a bright butter yellow like so many you see, but instead has the deeper orange gold color advanced collectors seek in this series.
