As commercial production of coins ceased for a time in San Francisco with no nickels issued this year bearing the S mintmark there were leftover dies which could be used. This is an example of FS-501 (a later die state) earlier known as FS-034. The top loop off the S is just above the top of the D and a bit appears at the upper left of the primary D mintmark with a slight bit of the bottom S curve under the bottom of the D. Nice coin with pleasing luster and a nice overall look.
